bright and cheery with a chance of never …

Today I spent some time in a delusional day dream wonderland.  I know this is a blog primarily about our redecoration of this Brooklyn tenement apartment, but whenever I have to deal with my laundry I absolutely CRAVE a laundry room.  So I thought I would design my dream laundry room – even if it is just illustrating a fantasy.

First I would start with these gorgeous reclaimed timber floors from Victorian Woodworks – these slow grown fleet street pine floors in the Swedish finish would be a perfect foundation for the space.

This bright and cheery original vintage wallpaper from Johnny-Tapete would be everywhere on the walls.  I am obsessed with this wallpaper named Limetta … especially its subtle chevron pattern and hints of pewter metallic goodness.  It’s like sunshine beaming off the walls!

There would have to be lots of custom built-in styled cabinetry with glass front cabinets to hold freshly laundered linens, plenty of drawers for organization, some place to hang my Husband’s dress shirts , a place to conceal my ironing board, pullout bins for hampers and most importantly it must be painted a blindingly glossy white.  Though not exactly what I have envisioned this example from Better Homes & Gardens is just about right.

The perfect laundry room would also require a gorgeous vintage double basin porcelain farmhouse sink.  I have always loved the ones with legs and a high back very much like this one below from This Old Tub and Sink item #2BKSL63.

Although a large window or two would be a must in my dream laundry room I would also need lighting and I think a fixture from School House Electric would be ideal.  Everything they produce is great, but this hand painted shade in modern lemon is spot on for a ceiling light fixture.

As for technology – a front load washer and dryer would be a must.  Not only are they aesthetically superior they are also more efficient.  I think this Maytag front load washer and the matching dryer in oxide would fit perfectly in my dream laundry room.

I know I know I know it would most likely require a lottery win to have a laundry room like this in New York City … but a girl can dream!!!

  1. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ~ wonderful post!!

I love all of it ~ including the glass front cabinets, but you know how I am. ;)

As for the front load washer – have you actually had them? They have a terrible problem with the rubber ring seal that keeps the water from coming out. They instantly become moldy which adds a disgusting smell to everything that you wash. The rings are pain in the neck to clean once they become moldy – and it is also a pain to order a new ring (not to mention expensive!)

Just sayin’ unless you’re flush with a lot of extra cash and wanna smell musty… while they look pretty, I don’t think that they are worth the 4x price tag of a traditional top loader washing machine.

  2. While I have never OWNED a front-loading washer, I have certainly used them. My Mother and Mother-in-law both have them as well as a number of friends. As far as the mold, I have heard both that washing clothes with bleach occasionally (standard procedure right?) and leaving the door cracked when not in use to dissipate moisture are helpful in keeping the mold under control. I have never known anyone WITH the mold situation though so I cannot testify to this ‘fixing’ the problem.

  3. no worries!!! not like we will be purchasing a washer or dryer in the near future, right David!? besides in my fantasy world there is no mold :P
